Iain is head of D&W's Property Group and specialises in commercial property development, including tax-driven developments. He has also built up an arbitration practice on property disputes, especially concerning rent reviews. Since the escalation of stamp duty rates in the late 1990s Iain has also developed an expertise in, originally, stamp duty planning, then other property taxes, and latterly Stamp Duty Land Tax. He has worked closely with HMRC on the development and introduction of SDLT. Iain sits on one of the HMRC consultative committees on SDLT.

Advised in development and introduction of SDLT via Revenue consultative committees and Law Society of Scotland Tax Committee.

Advised HBoS plc on acquisition of large city centre site in Edinburgh for major mixed use development.

Advised Clydesdale Bank plc on the redevelopment of their Glasgow city centre HQ.
