Qualified Assistant

What did you do before life at D&W?

When I finished school - Craigholme, Glasgow - I took some time out before starting my law degree at University of Strathclyde.  During my Diploma year at the GGSL I secured my traineeship with D&W and after enjoying my last ever student length summer (4 months of long lies and holidays….) I started my traineeship in September 2006.  Work prior to this included restaurant/bar work and working for a hire drive company.

What were your first impressions of D&W?

Everyone was very "human"!  There was a surprisingly relaxed atmosphere in the offices, whilst at the same time a great work ethic and an unmistakable air of professionalism.  At the assessment centre I didn't feel nervous or intimidated, despite the size of the firm and the level of competition.

What is/are your favourite thing(s) about working for D&W?

There's a great team spirit, and as a trainee people try to involve you in their work as much as possible.  If you don't understand what's going on, or you feel out of your depth, there is always someone who will explain things to you - from newly qualified assistants to partners.

What are your aspirations both in and out of D&W?

In the office

  • To find something I really enjoy and that I can excel in.

Out of the office

  • To successfully campaign for a 4 day working week (weekends are definitely not long enough)
  • To see more of the world - preferably places with lots of sunshine and idyllic beaches.

What are the 3 best pieces of advice you have been given that you would pass on to others?

Never be afraid to ask "stupid" questions - as a trainee you can get away with this, so make the most of it!

Make use of other people's knowledge.  There's no point puzzling over something yourself for hours on end when you work with a wide range of people with a huge breadth of experience and expertise.

Don't drink too much on a "school" night!

What's your most memorable occasion at D&W?

Being called downstairs to a completion meeting for the umpteenth time, and dutifully taking my notepad and pen, only to discover the deal had completed and everyone was drinking champagne!  It would have been rude not to join them.
